How to create a ragged edge applique patch

Torn edge applique is perhaps the simplest type of applique that exists in machine embroidery. It is easy to execute and easy to digitize. This applique is very economical in stitching.

The technological process of creating an application is simple and consists of 2 simple steps:

·       Embroidery of the outline that shows where to put the applique fabric. Then the machine stops and the frame moves out so that it is more convenient to put the application fabric sprayed with temporary fixation glue.

·       Sew on appliqué fabric with a regular plain stitch or loose zigzag stitch to hold it in place. After sewing, the machine stops and the frame moves out so that excess fabric is cut right in the hem.

Cut the fabric arbitrarily, one might even say artistic: we retreat from the edge 3-5 mm and cut. Then you can fray the edges.

 

Edge processing

Usually, a simple stitch (run) in several passes is used for appliqué with a torn edge. Satin with a torn edge effect, small zigzag, motive stitching - whatever you like can be used.

Manual digitizing

General guidelines for creating a frayed edge applique

To achieve the look of a vintage worn fabric, the applique fabric is best to choose a 100% cotton twill and wash it before embroidering. There is nothing to stabilize the appliqué fabric, otherwise the desired frayed edge effect will not work, because the stabilizer will not allow the cut to crumble.

It is better to choose the color of the appliqué stitching in the color of the main fabric, and not the fabric of the applique itself. After washing, the edges of the appliqué will fray even more and the stitches will not be visible.
